Deschutes County Search and Rescue of Bend, Oregon
The Deschutes County Sheriff’s SAR mission is to provide professional, high-quality search and rescue assistance to citizens of Deschutes County, visitors who recreate locally, and mutual aid to other counties as requested. The ability to save a life or effect a successful rescue is often dependent upon how quickly the person can be found or reached.
Deschutes County Search & Rescue includes general volunteers as well as highly trained volunteers who serve on specialty teams. The SAR Teams include swift water rescue, mountain (MRU) and cave rescue, medical evacuation and K-9 (canine) search. Additional teams include Incident Management Team (IMT), logistics team, Air Operations, ATV team, snowmobile winter search team, tracking team, ground team, ski team, dive team and a horse team. All members complete a Wilderness First Responder training. Other volunteers are EMT certified. Medical team members operate under the direction of a St. Charles Medical Center-Bend Physician Adviser.
Search & Rescue is a highly demanding volunteer service in terms of both training and missions. Before new members begin training they must undergo a background test, drug test, complete a physical fitness hiking test and have a personal interview with the Sheriff’s Office and the SAR staff. Then they must complete two online courses, ICS 100 and ICS 700, prior to the first day of class in the training Academy which includes approximately 20 days of class time. Members are required to log a minimum of 100 hours annually.

Rescue3 Tower Rescue For Tower Workers Training Course
This Tower Rescue For Tower Workers training is a course offered by Matt Adams of Crux Rescue, a certified provider of Rescue3 certification instruction offering Rescue 3 International curriculum based training standards. Those who work at height face the possibility of witnessing a fellow worker who has fallen and is stranded, hanging in fall protection support gear. This Co-Worker Rescue at Heights course teaches students how to assist a fallen worker at height. In this course industry accepted rescue techniques and industry standard equipment are used to help students learn how to assist and rescue a colleague from a dangerous situation after they have dropped into their fall arrest system. The rapid release of workers hanging, trapped, in a fall arrest system is the highest priority to help prevent further arrest system induced injury. Rescue3 Technical Rope Technician Level Training Course
This Technical Rope Technician Level training is a course offered by Matt Adams of Crux Rescue, a certified provider of Rescue3 certification instruction offering Rescue 3 International curriculum based training standards. This course is designed to take students from the basics of rope rescue to more advanced, over-the-bank rescues, and progressively to the vertical oriented rescue maneuvers. Students learn and practice such skills as preplanning, scene assessment and management, rope ascending, rope descending, belaying on rescue rope systems, mechanical advantage systems, lowering and raising systems, patient packaging, litter attending, tethers, and highlines.

Rescue3 Swiftwater Rescue Technician 1 (SRT-1) Training Course
This Swiftwater Rescue Technician 1 training is a course offered by Matt Adams of Crux Rescue, a certified provider of Rescue3 certification instruction offering Rescue 3 International curriculum based training standards. This three day course offers the minimum swiftwater rescue training recommended for those who work in, on or alongside moving water. On the first day students receive classroom instruction which provides detailed knowledge of hydrology and the hazards associated with moving water. The next two days are spent on the river learning the skills of shallow water crossings, self rescue and the effective techniques for the rescue of others. Completion of this course qualifies personnel to work in and on moving water in the “hot zone”. This course covers the NFPA 2500 (Formerly NFPA 1670) Operations Level certification training curriculum. Rescue3 Swiftwater Rescue Technician Advanced Training Course
This Swiftwater Rescue Technician Advanced training is a course offered by Matt Adams of Crux Rescue, a certified provider of Rescue3 certification instruction offering Rescue 3 International curriculum based training standards. This 3 1/2 day advanced course will expand the expertise of those who have taken the SRT-1 course with advanced instruction in the realm of extreme whitewater situations with the emphasis of the course teaching and student practice focusing on victim rescue and night operations. This class integrates skills learned in SRT-1 and Technical Rope Technician Level NFPA 1006 & NFPA 2500 (Formerly NFPA 1670).
Students who complete this course, the SRT-1 course and the Technical Rope Technician Level course will have completed the three courses necessary to satisfy the requirement outlined in NFPA 1006 / NFPA 2500 (Formerly NFPA 1670) Surface/Swift Water Technician Level and they qualify to operate on a Swift Water/Flood search & Rescue team in accordance with NFPA.
